Mass Primary Education in the Nineteenth Century

In this paper we review the nineteenth-century origins of the contemporary ap-proach to primary education provision. As we trace the spread of mass primary education in Europe as well as in other regions of the world we come to conclu-sion that this was a truly global phenomenon of a planetary-scale importance. Moreover, the expansion of the mass education contributed significantly to an-other global phenomenon – the emergence of nation-states.
